On Saturday, over 300 people attended Causa’s 17th annual Immigrant Action Day at Chemeketa Community College in Salem. This year we were honored to have Congressman Kurt Schrader – representing Oregon’s 5th District – discuss his support for immigration reform and his work in Washington D.C.
Congressman Schrader’s attendance at this year’s Immigrant Action Day didn’t go unnoticed and was a topic of attack by national right-wing radio host Rush Limbaugh who freely admits that “Millennials or young people” who hear his radio show will think he’s a “racist, sexist, bigot, homophobe...”
Not surprisingly, Limbaugh let the lies fly about what Congressman Schrader actually said at Immigrant Action Day and confused two articles from right-wing website Breitbart.
What Congressman Schrader did say, as quoted by the Portland Tribune, is that:
…the current debate on federal immigration policy is “the civil rights battle for the younger generation.”
“This is what is at stake now for a lot of you and your families. I feel a kinship and a need to support all people who had an opportunity to come to this great country.
Defending President Obama’s Immigrant Action to provide relief to families, Congressman Schrader said:
“All he is doing is setting priorities for law enforcement in a tough budget environment, which Republicans should be pleased with. So let’s be smart about it and give hope to people who have been here for a long time and have contributed a huge amount to society.”
